Taylorsville, established 1852 pop.154, sits in the stunning Indian Valley, ringed by the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Land rolls out like endless green seas. Creeks run. The town’s dogs sleep on the wide porch next to the flower boxes and everyone greets them by name. But the owner is ready for her next adventure. The historic brick building—part of which is rented to the US government for the post office—is for sale. Living quarters include a 2-bedroom, 2-bath flat, with vaulted ceilings and large windows. Indian Valley and Plumas County
Indian Valley feels like the secret hideaway that time forgot, where you can slip away into four distinct seasons of adventure; nature always delighting as her canvas changes with the weather. Tucked away on the far side of Plumas County about 30 minutes from Lake Almanor, Taylorsville is a true mountain oasis. Ranchers, hikers, artists, bikers, hunters, or explorers of any kind are guarunteed to find the respite they seek here.
Nestled in arguably the most stunning corner of Indian Valley, Taylorsville is a little town with big charm at the base of Mount Hough. Located at the confluence of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges, the valley is encircled with stunning mountain crests in every direction.
An old ranching community, Taylorsville is just the right kind of sleepy. Two lane roads wind through the lush valley—and one can walk or bike right down the middle of the road most days. Residents enjoy a peaceful, rural life in this fertile sub-alpine meadow, which comes alive with vibrant fall colors reminiscent of northern New England fall.
With only 154 residents, Taylorsville has more cows than people. The town’s history dates back to 1850 when frontiersman Peter Lassen discovered Indian Valley while searching for the mythical “Gold Lake.” Lassen established an outpost in 1851 to supply goods to travelers on their quest for gold. Most settlers left the valley in winter, but Jobe Taylor, who built the first permanent residence at Taylor’s Ranch, turned it into a hotel and eventually a full-time community.
Taylorsville Campground is located on the edge of town, next to the scenic, fishable, and swimmable Indian Creek. Unlike Lassen, who moved on after selling his land, Taylor expanded his holdings, constructing a barn, a store, a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a butcher shop. By giving land to those willing to start businesses, Taylor helped Taylorsville become the third largest community in Plumas County by the early 1880s. The community, guided by Taylor, sought to coexist with the native population, maintaining this harmony for decades.
Young’s Market has a long and storied history. The time has come to pass the legacy onto another family who can enjoy this beautiful place as much as we have.
Taylorsville is one of the stops on an exciting new trail system being built. The Connected Communities Project is a visionary effort led in partnership by federal land managers, SBTS, and community partners to connect 15 mountain towns for economic prosperity through outdoor recreation—an $887 billion industry. It will create a vision for a recreation-focused lifestyle through community investment, shared stewardship, economic opportunity, and important new local jobs.
Are you ready to make a life and not just a living? This could be your opportunity for a new lifestyle.
